Yesterday I was invited to speak at Carey Baptist Church‘s Seniors’ Lunch. I was pretty much given a free choice of topics, so I chose to talk about Rembrandt, and particularly his painting “The Return of the Prodigal Son.“

This painting is blowing my mind. I’m due to give a talk on Rembrandt, and this painting in particular, on Wednesday. I’ll post it up here when I’ve done it, but for now just have a look.

As Christmas is approaching, I thought I’d post a few pieces of Christmassy art over the next few days. And today I’m starting with two paintings, one painted in the first half of the 17th Century, towards the end of the Renaissance. I don’t claim to be an expert, or even to know much at all about this kind of painting, but I love the way these guys captured what was going on as Jesus was born.
